Priya Mallick, the girl next door turned into a new singing sensation famous as #PatnaKiPhuljhari, title ornamented by another proud Bihari, Sonakshi Sinha herself.
So, what’s her story and the journey so far? Let’s unwind this.
Following are the excerpts based on an exclusive interview of Priya Mallick with Shubhra on behalf of PatnaPage3
Priya says, “She couldn’t sleep until her mother sang lullabies for her during childhood. It was her initial introduction with music that left a deep mark on her tender mind and heart. She started singing at the age of five, but found a major breakthrough after winning “Vestige Idol” in 2014.
She also tried her luck in other reality shows like Little Champs, Indian Idol Junior etc. However, things didn’t turn up the way she expected. However, she learnt this art of not giving up from her parents. She decided to make music her first priority. Even after being bright in studies, she wanted to do something different from the stereotypes of being a Bihari (like to excel in studies and cracking UPSC, or being a Banker etc). She wanted to prove herself as an artist first and everything else later.
Valuing the confidence and the commitment of her daughter, her mother Samta Mallick wrapped up her seventeen year old parlor, her father Bharat Bhushan Mallick shifted his business to Mumbai, so that Priya can take her journey towards singing further in guidance of her mentor Vijay Singh. It was a turning point in Priya’s life.
This journey was like a milestone in her singing career. She mostly sang original compositions there. Though she sang revised versions of bhajans in the show according to the concept, but she is also well versed in all genres of singing ranging from Bollywood to English. Her epic performances on the show, like “Aisi Laagi Lagan”, “Hey Arjun” and others received standing ovations from the judges Sonakshi Sinha, Shekhar Ravijani, Sachin-Jigar, and Kanika Kapoor. She spent several candid and fruitful moments on set with singing icons like Sonu Nigam, Anup Jalota, and stars like Ranveer Singh.
She completed her journey of Om Shanti Om being the 1st runner up, and she won the heart of audience all over.
Even after having such a fairy tale starting of her career, Priya has her foot on ground. She says, the journey begins now and I have several milestones to achieve. She idolises Sunidhi Chauhan as a performer. Sia and Adele are icons she adores in Western Musical World. She is determined to work even harder and bring laurels to her soil, i.e. Bihar.
In addition to being a remarkable singer, she is trained in Kathak, very fond of sarees and goggles and loves to click selfies. She adores kids, and loves to be around them and plans to adopt one herself.
I’m an avid reader, a foodie, and a movie buff; who is passionate about the positivity around us. I love to dream and convert those dreams into words. At one moment I’m inside a shell and the very next moment I’m the ferocious one. Dynamism is my forte.
Apart from being a dreamer, I’m also a woman with a beating heart and a curious mind questioning traditional social norms. I’m a rebel at one moment and just opposite at the very next moment. My fuel is the smile of my son, the happiness of my family, and lots of coffee.
I’m also not ashamed of spending money on buying books and to fill my (always empty) stomach.
