Remembering Sridevi on her 55th Birth Anniversary

Remembering today the first female superstar of Bollywood, Sridevi. Her sudden demise left the whole country in shock. Today on her birthday we miss her. She was the epitome of beauty & talent. Today on her birth anniversary we are talking about her 5 of her best performances. It was tough to select these five because every movie of Sridevi is commendable, and was loved my many.

  • Movie – Mr India 1987
  • Directed By – Shekhar Kapur
  • Release Date – 29 May 1987
  • Music By – Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Javed Akhtar (lyrics)

This film remains cult classic of India since 1987. Anil Kapoor and Sridevi in lead role did an impeccable job. The “hawa-hawaii” performance by Sridevi and “mogambo Khush hua” by Amrish Puri is still the most used slang in India. Hawa- Hawai is still one of the peppiest song to perform on.

  • Movie – English Vinglish
  • Directed By – Gauri Shinde
  • Release Date – 14 September 2012 (TIFF)
    • 5 October 2012 (India)
  • Music By – Amit Trivedi

This 2012 release of Sridevi after 15 years of her last screen presence was a trend setter then and now. A story of Shashi, an entrepreneur lady, making snacks, earning her own bread was struggling for respect from her husband and daughter because she didn’t know to speak English. She gets herself enrolled in an English speaking class and in the journey of learning English she gets her self-respect back. The journey is so beautifully portrayed by Sridevi, that it gives chills and goose-bumps. After 15 years she proved that she can make you laugh, cry and feel every emotion, and she is not something to be forgotten as such.

  • Movie – Chandni
  • Directed By – Yash Chopra
  • Release Date – 14 September 1989
  • Music By – Shiv-Hari

Chandani is most remembered for Sridevi in White saree. The romance that Sridevi portrayed in this movie is still used as an example. This movie also saved the career of Yash Chopra as 80s was not a good time for this brilliant director.

  • Movie – MOM 7th July 2017
  • Directed By – Ravi Udyawar
  • Release Date – 7 July 2017
  • Music By – A. R. Rahman

Mom was a 2017 release of Sridevi, it was her one of the most powerful performances. Sridevi was highly lauded for her performance in this crime thriller. She won the Best Actress posthumously, for the first time in 63rd Filmfare Awards.

  • Movie Judaai (1997)
  • Directed By – Raj Kanwar
  • Release Date – 28 February 1997
  • Music By – Nadeem-Shravan

This movie is my most favorite performances of Sridevi, though her role was not positive her performance was lauded a lot. She played a character of a lady who was lured by wealth and in order to satisfy her want to be rich she sells her husband and gets him married to another woman. This drama is a full entertainer. This movie marked the last presence of Sridevi on screen after which she took a break of 15 years.

Anubha Rani

I'm an avid reader, a foodie, and a movie buff; who is passionate about the positivity around us. I love to dream and convert those dreams into words. At one moment I'm inside a shell and the very next moment I'm the ferocious one. Dynamism is my forte. Apart from being a dreamer, I'm also a woman with a beating heart and a curious mind questioning traditional social norms. I'm a rebel at one moment and just opposite at the very next moment. My fuel is the smile of my son, the happiness of my family, and lots of coffee. I'm also not ashamed of spending money on buying books and to fill my (always empty) stomach.
